BODEGAS COVINCA D.O. CARIÑENA
The Appellation Cariñena was created as we know it today 90 years ago (second oldest in Spain), but the winemaking history of this area started, at least, in the III Century B.C. The Celt-Iberian people of that time, mixed their wine with honey, a tradition that the Romans continued when they arrived to this area. In a 1415 document, the king Ferdinand I of Aragon listed a number of preferred foods that included Vino de Cariñena and Longares (Longares is the small town where Covinca is located).
In the XIX Century, when the filoxera attacked the French vines, the southern French growers sourced filoxera-resistant root-stocks in this part of Spain, and bought massive amounts of wine. This originated the direct train line between Zaragoza (just 20 minutes from Longares, and the capital of the region) and the South of France, expanding Garnacha and Mazuela (aka Cariñena) to the neighboring country, where they are known as Grenache and Carignan.
A small group of winegrowers joined forces in 1945 to create the Cooperativa de Longares: Covinca. The winery is dedicated to the member’s wonderful Garnacha vines, native to this part or the world. From the beginning, this group of families had a clear idea of what their goal was: to preserve the regions’ traditions, and to make the highest quality wines. Their respect for the land promoted the sustainable farming that lasts to our days. Today, Covinca’s facilities expand over 160,000 square feet, and their production capabilities near 20M liters of wine.
Covinca exports 60% of its production to over 30 countries throughout the world. Bodegas Covinca has almost 150 ha. of Garnacha vines that average 55 years old (all of them are over 30 years old), all of them at over 1,800 feet of elevation. Total acreage is 1,200 ha.
